Hablar sobre valores es una de las empresas más arriesgadas en nuestra época. No es raro escuchar frases desalentadoras como “ya no hay valores”, “no se respeta nada”, “lo único que hay es impunidad al delincuente”, “se han perdido los valores tradicionales sin que haya otros que los substituyan”, etcétera. El libro de Peter Dabdoub asume el riesgo y propone una antología de valores humanos válida para nuestra ubicación como individuos en un mundo globalizado extremadamente complejo. Tiene, entre otras virtudes, una enumeración de las funciones que cumplen los valores, así como una metodología básica para concientizarlos y ponerlos en práctica. Pero no se queda ahí, sino que desde el principio destaca qué es lo que los valores fundamentan en la vida de cualquier persona; a saber, tener éxito en el ejercicio de nuestra voluntad y lograr la felicidad a través de aportarle a nuestra existencia un significado ético.
A partir de la etimología de algunos valores Dabdoub proporciona una noción de ellos. Como en su elaboración suele contrastar el valor con su opuesto, la conceptualización que tiene el lector de cada valor es integrada y representada con claridad por las respuestas que el lector ha de dar a las interrogantes personales que se le plantean. Por otra parte, suele contextualizar dinámicamente cada valor al relacionarlo con otros valores que sirven como cajas de resonancia del analizado. De esta manera Dabdoub involucra activamente al lector de manera que vaya haciendo suyo el discurso sobre valores.
Con un estilo coloquial y correcto nos induce a reflexionar sobre cada uno de los valores que contiene su antología de valores.
Un libro recomendable para lectores que pretendan insertarse en la vida moderna a través de una perspectiva que les proporcione satisfacciones personales sustentadas en un comportamiento ético realizador de valores.
